NEW NAPPA LEATHER MANUFACTURE

NAPPA LEATHER MANUFACTURE:                                                                                                  The leather manufacturing process is divided into three fundamental sub-processes: preparatory stages, tanning and crusting. All true leathers will undergo these sub-processes. A further sub-process, surface coating can be added into the leather process sequence but not all leathers receive surface treatment. Since many types of leather exist, it is difficult to create a list of operations that all leathers must undergo.

The preparatory stages are when the hide/skin is prepared for tanning. Preparatory stages may include: preservation, soaking, liming, unhairing, fleshing, splitting, reliming, deliming, bating, degreasing, frizing, bleaching, pickling and depickling.
 
Leather tanning in Fes, Morocco

Tanning is the process which converts the protein of the raw hide or skin into a stable material which will not putrefy and is suitable for a wide variety of end applications. The principal difference between raw hides and tanned hides is that raw hides dry out to form a hard inflexible material that when re-wetted (or wetted back) putrefy, while tanned material dries out to a flexible form that does not become putrid when wetted back. There is a large number of different tanning methods and materials that can be used, the choice is ultimately dependent on the end application of the leather. The most commonly used tanning material is chromium, which leaves the leather once tanned a pale blue color (due to the chromium), this product is commonly called “wet blue”. The hides once they have finished pickling will typically be between pH of 2.8-3.2. At this point the hides would be loaded in a drum and immersed in a float containing the tanning liquor. The hides are allowed to soak (while the drum slowly rotates about its axle) and the tanning liquor slowly penetrates through the full substance of the hide. Regular checks will be made to see the penetration by cutting the cross-section of a hide and observing the degree of penetration. Once a good even degree of penetration exists, the pH of the float is slowly raised in a process called basification. This basification process fixes the tanning material to the leather and the more tanning material fixed the higher the hydrothermal stability and increased shrinkage temperature resistance of the leather. The pH of the leather when chrome tanned would typically finish somewhere between 3.8-4.2.

Crusting is when the hide/skin is thinned, retanned and lubricated. Often, a coloring operation is included in the crusting sub-process. The chemicals added during crusting have to be fixed in place. The culmination of the crusting sub-process is the drying and softening operations. Crusting may include the following operations: wetting back, sammying, splitting, shaving, rechroming, neutralization, retanning, dyeing, fatliquoring, filling, stuffing, stripping, whitening, fixating, setting, drying, conditioning, milling, staking, and buffing.

For some leathers a surface coating is applied. Tanners refer to this as finishing. Finishing operations may include: oiling, brushing, padding, impregnation, buffing, spraying, roller coating, curtain coating, polishing, plating, embossing, ironing, ironing/combing (for hair-on), glazing and tumbling.

ARMOR ON LEATHER ITEMS:                                                                                                              The Perfect Armor Improved: Water Hardened Leather

 Some years ago, I wrote an article on how to make hardened leather armor, using beeswax. Since then, I have concluded that although the method I described works reasonably well for SCA purposes--I have fought in my wax hardened klibanion for a good many years now--it is quite unlikely that it is the method used in period for armor.

I reached that conclusion for three reasons:

 1. Beeswax is a lubricant. Furthermore, stiffening the leather makes it easier to cut, just as it is easier to slice meat if it is half frozen. So although wax hardened leather provides protection against the sort of blunt weapons we fight with, it would be of very limited usefulness against sharp swords, arrows, and the like.

2. Although I have found no period descriptions of the process for hardening leather, the period term for hardened leather is "cuirboulli," which translates as "boiled (or cooked) leather." That is not the natural way of describing the wax hardening process.

3. I have found an entirely different way of hardening leather which does fit the term and which produces armor that is much better protection against real weapons. This article describes that process. As it happens, in addition to being a better guess at what was done in period, it is also a somewhat better technology for making SCA armor.

LEATHER PANT:One trend that seems to never go out of type is women's leather pants. Get all of those misconceptions out of your mind and embrace the deliciousness that is quality grain leather. Yes, more individuals that bikers and cowboys wear leather pants and no, you will not squeak while walking down the street in leather pants. Yes, leather pants can be worn in the summer and also during the daytime. No, leather pants are not difficult to clean, nor are they outrageously expensive that only a choice few can afford them. If these are your reasons for not wearing a hot pair of women's leather pants, you have run out of excuses, so get ready to shimmy and slither into a fantastic pair! 

Leather pants are tremendously trendy, especially with today's hot fad of the skinny pants. Virtually anyone can look fantastic while wearing skinny pants, and they work great with those super stunning stilettos or those big bulky boots. Keep in mind that any type of pants you choose should properly fit your figure. If you can't wear skinny pants, then don't buy skinny pants. Likewise, if you can't wear low slung hip huggers, then don't buy low slung hip huggers. You will look much better in a style that fits your body type than one that is popular, but looks awkward on your body. 

If you are wondering what to wear with your women's leather pants, the options are limitless. Unless you enjoy looking like a vampire hunter, drag queen, or dominatrix (and let's face it, who doesn't?), avoid wearing head to toe leather. Pair your steaming hot leather pants with a loose fitting top. One great thing about leather pants is that you can still be sexy and show off your curves without showing skin. For this reason, you can also choose a skin baring, super sexy top while still being appropriately covered. Everyone knows that bare skin overload (for example, a super mini skirt paired with a barely-there top) is horrifically outdated and even more inappropriate, so any outfit that include women's leather pants is perfect for those who want to cover up without hiding their best assets. 

Typically, women's leather pants do not make their way into the work wear wardrobe, but today's leather suits have completely shattered the mold. Usually, the only person that wears a leather suit is a bounty hunter or country music star, and neither look is particular attractive. However, by pairing your leather pants with a slim fitting leather blazer, you can create a spectacular look that is perfectly appropriate for wearing in a professional workplace setting. Be sure to offset your leather pants and blazer with a cotton or silk blouse. For an especially smart look, pair a crisp shirt with the leather outfit.

Even though the “less is more" theory is a popular one with most men, there is something to be said about leather pants. Therefore, you should avoid wearing these skirts during the day, particularly, during the mid day.

A village loaded with artisans and craftspeople. Small shops with unusual arts and crafts abound featuring the work of glass artists, stone and iron sculptors and wood workers. In addition there is one outstanding leather craftsman who has been tooling and designing leather since 1952.

K. W. Allen began crafting leather while in the U.S. Navy. He continued throughout his military career, retiring in 1971. As a City Inspector in Austin, Round Rock, Port Lavaca and Victoria, Texas he continued his leather business on the side.

In 1997 he and wife Ellen "retired" to their second home in Wimberley, Texas where they opened their own business, Custom Leather by KWA. The shop is located next to the house at 405 Leveritts Loop.



"We specialize in custom orders only." Belts, holsters, knife sheaths and law enforcement rigs are all made to customer specifications. In addition, repairs on most leather items can be accomplished. There is no catalog or price list. Price is determined for each individual order. Your order is discussed with you and estimates are made prior to start of each project. A down payment is required on each order. If the completed project does not meet with your expectations you do not have to accept the completed project. We build leather products to your standards.

Quality of workmanship 

Belts are measured and made for each individual. All styles from regular to taper tip and Ranger belts are made to order. If a name is desired, then the belt is measured for proper name placement. Belts can be basketweave, hand tooled or plain in natural black, brown or saddle tan. Other colors by special order.

K. W. has been constructing knife sheaths for knife makers not only in Texas but across the United States for over 30 years. Many custom knife makers who do not make their own sheaths send them to Wimberley for a KWA sheath.

Specialty items include motorcycle chaps, sewing patches on motorcycle vests, even making leather items for motorcycles and motorcycle enthusiasts.

K.W. has made cowboy chaps by order for many years. His access to colored and exotic leathers and silver conchos has helped in the creation of many beautiful chaps for many a proud cowboy.

Hand tooled leather is a work of art. K.W. is an excellent artist in his hand work and has retained patterns for as many years as he has been working in leather.

His holster and gun belts range from re-enactment to current day law enforcement styles. Over the years he has developed molds for mag pouches, cuff cases, radio holders, asp holders and flashlight holders. He has made molds for special features and products and has an extensive library. Each holster is fitted to each individual gun. The reason for this is to insure the gun is seated in the holster for proper fit.

In 2000 one of K. W.'s tooled and hand sewn holsters received a First Place award at the International Exhibition of Leather Guilds competition in Kansas City, Kansas.
